A major EU project to engage people across the bloc on shaping Europe's future kicked off in Ireland this morning (Friday morning 11:00am Irish time).
Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister Simon Coveney delivered online addresses at the Irish launch of the Conference on the Future of Europe. It’s a joint initiative of the three EU institutions – the Council, Parliament and Commission. And it will involve a year-long series of conferences and consultations aimed at promoting greater citizen engagement in determining the future of the EU.
Karen Coleman now reports on how the Conference will be rolled out in Ireland and what kind of issues could crop up during it.

A new EU project involving people from all corners of the bloc won’t succeed unless their views are taken seriously. That’s the warning from Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly.
The Conference on the Future of Europe was officially launched in the European Parliament in Strasbourg yesterday (Sunday May 9). It will be overseen by the European Commission, European Parliament and Council.
The year-long project will engage citizens on the debate about Europe’s future challenges and priorities. The goal of the Conference is to give citizens a greater say in shaping Europe’s policies.
But Sean Kelly says it has to be a bottom-up and not top-down exercise for it to succeed.

The Conference on the Future of Europe was officially launched yesterday in Strasbourg. The year-long event aims to involve EU citizens in contributing ideas on Europe’s future.
European, national, regional and local authorities as well as civil society and other organisations, will be able to organise events. And a multi-lingual digital platform has been set up to enable people to get involved online.

Fine Gael MEP Frances Fitzgerald talks to EuroParlRadio Editor Karen Coleman about Turkey’s regressive stance on women which was highlighted again during a recent trip of the European Commission President to Ankara.
During the meeting, Ursula von der Leyen was relegated to a sofa, while her European Council counterpart, Charles Michel sat on a stately chair next to the Turkish president.
President von der Leyen told the European Parliament on Monday 26th April that the incident left here feeling hurt and alone.
