MEPs in the European Parliament slammed the Polish government and its prime minister this morning in a bruising debate about rule of law issues in Poland.
The debate followed a ruling earlier this month by Poland’s constitutional tribunal, which found that key parts of EU law were incompatible with the Country’s constitution.
During the debate the Polish Prime Minister (Mateusz Morawiecki), defended the Court’s decision and he accused the EU of blackmail.
Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says Poland must abide by EU rules if it’s to benefit from membership of the bloc.

Billions of Euro in EU covid recovery funding should only be distributed to countries that meet rule of law standards – that’s according to Barry Andrews. The Recovery and Resilience Facility is made up of loans and grants totalling more than €720 billion. In the terms, member states agreed respect for EU values would be a prerequisite for the cash. The EU should suspend its funding to Poland until it addresses rule of law issues that are causing alarm across EU capitals.
That’s the call from Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly who was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
His comments followed a fiery debate in the Parliament this morning when the Polish Prime Minister (Mateusz Morawiecki) was eviscerated by many MEPs for the erosion of fundamental rights and judicial independence in his country.
Earlier this month Poland’s constitutional tribunal found that EU treaties were incompatible with Poland’s national constitution. Sean Kelly says Poland needs to get its house in order before it’s given badly-needed EU funds.

The President of the European Commission says the EU cannot and will not allow EU common values to be put at risk because of rule of law transgressions in Poland.
In a debate in the European Parliament this morning, Ursula von der Leyen said a recent judicial ruling in Poland was deeply concerning.
Earlier this month Poland’s constitutional tribunal found that EU treaties were incompatible with Poland’s national constitution. The ruling’s caused outcry in many EU circles.
During the debate, Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly addressed the Polish Prime minister who was in the chamber, and questioned his government’s beliefs in the rule of law.

Mental health and wellbeing issues are still taboo in Ireland and elsewhere in the EU and preventative measures aren’t explored enough to help those with mental health problems.
That’s according to Fine Gael MEP Maria Walsh.
She was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg where mental health issues were discussed this weekend by young people from all over the EU including Ireland.
Today (Sunday October 10) is World Mental Health Day which is designed to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world.
Maria Walsh says a lot more can be done to help those who suffer mental health problems.

A youth panel from Mindspace Mayo were part of a discussion on mental health in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The debate was part of the European Youth Event which has been hosting virtual and in-person activities in Strasbourg.

The views of thousands of young people, including Irish participants, on Europe’s future, will be heard in Strasbourg over the next two days.
The European Youth Event (EYE) kicked off in the European Parliament today. The 2-day event will feature dozens of activities, debates and workshops which will focus on topics such as the environment, democracy, human rights and social inequalities.
The goal is to come up with ideas that can help shape Europe’s future. Maria Walsh, Fine Gael MEP for the Midlands North-West is attending the event.
