Eamonn Torsney talks to the Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune on the vote last week in the European Parliament on having cleaner cars on EU roads by 2030.
MEPs have proposed setting a target of 40% (forty percent) for reducing EU fleet-wide CO2 emissions for new cars by 2030. They want an intermediate target of 20% by 2025.
The European Parliament also voted for a speedier market uptake of electric and low-emission cars.
The interview was conducted before the vote.

Ireland has much more to do when it comes to rolling out initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicles.
That’s according to the Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune who’s on the European Parliament’s Transport Committee. MEPs last week voted to have cleaner cars on EU roads by 2030.
They’re proposing setting a target of 40% (forty percent) for reducing EU fleet-wide CO2 emissions for new cars by 2030.
The European Parliament also voted for a speedier market uptake of electric and low-emission cars. Deirdre Clune says Ireland isn’t doing enough to reduce CO2 emissions in the transport area.

Her warnings follow recent comments made by the British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt. During an address to the Tory conference last week, he likened the EU to the Soviet Union.
Marian Harkin says such divisive language just drives people into corners.

The government commissioned reports on the North-South Interconnector have not taken public acceptance into account.
That’s the view of the Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy.
He was commenting on the two independent reports which went before the cabinet last week. One of the reports concluded that - from a techno-economic perspective - the construction of overhead pylons was a better option than undergrounding the interconnector.
However, Matt Carthy says the underground option is the only acceptable one.
