The European Parliament has voted to approve Mairead McGuinness as the EU Commissioner for Financial Stability.
583 MEPs voted in favour, 75 against and 37 abstained.
She was nominated for the role following the resignation of Phil Hogan and is expected to be formally appointed in the coming days.
McGuinness has been a Fine Gael MEP for Midlands-North-West since 2004 and also served as First Vice President of the Parliament.

She’s expected to receive the backing of MEPs and will be formally appointed in the coming days.

Green Party MEP Ciarán Cuffe is welcoming the European Parliament’s call to raise the EU’s 2030 climate target.
MEPs want to see a 60 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the next ten years.
That’s 5 per cent higher than what the EU Commission proposed.

MEPs have voted in favour of a 60 per cent emission reduction target by 2030.
The issue has caused divisions in the European Parliament as the Commission proposed a 55 per cent cut while the Greens wanted 65 per cent.
In the end, 352 MEPs voted in favour of the 60 per cent figure while 326 voted against.

The European Parliament has heard that less than 30 per cent of board members in the largest publicly listed EU companies are women while just 8 per cent are CEOs.
MEPs are now calling for a long-awaited plan on equality in business to get moving.
The ‘Women on Boards Directive’ has been held up since 2012 due to objections from some member states.

The outgoing MEP faces a vote in the European Parliament where she had been serving as first Vice-President.

The European Parliament will vote on Wednesday on the appointment of Mairead McGuinness to be Ireland’s new EU Commissioner for Financial Services. They’re also going to be voting on the new EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis.
Mr Dombrovskis was given the trade portfolio after Ireland’s former Commissioner Phil Hogan had to resign following the Golf-gate saga.
So what will it mean for Ireland and for EU trade in general now that Valdis Dombrovskis is set to formally take over the powerful EU Trade Commissioner role.
