The leaders of the political groups in the European Parliament are to meet tomorrow morning to discuss the outcome of the EU-UK Brexit trade deal.
The deal will need to be approved by both the European Parliament and the EU’s twenty seven (27) member countries.
However, MEPs have warned they will need time to scrutinise the deal before they vote on it.
Fianna Fail’s Barry Andrews says there’s a short window of time to do that.

Green Party MEP Ciarán Cuffe is warning the European Parliament must be given adequate time to properly scrutinise the Brexit Trade deal that was brokered on Christmas Eve.
The Parliament must ratify the deal for it to be fully implemented. It’s expected they will vote on it early next year.
However, Ciarán Cuffe says MEPs must be fully involved in the process of approving the deal.

They had hoped to vote on the deal by the end of this year but it was struck too late on Christmas eve for them to do so.
The deal will be ‘provisionally applied’ by the EU to avoid a no-deal outcome.
However Green party MEP Ciarán Cuffe says the provisional approval of the deal is not good.

The EU-Brexit trade deal will mean a decline in EU fishing quotas in British waters by 25 percent during a five and a half year transition period.
After that transition EU boats’ access to UK waters will be dependent on annual negotiations between both sides.
The Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune says Irish fishing industries will be impacted by the decline in fishing quotas.

The European Parliament has agreed to hold an extraordinary session later this month in order to vote on a Brexit trade deal if one is brokered by Sunday evening.
The EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier told MEPs this morning there were only hours left to broker a deal if it’s to enter into force on January 1st.
But some MEPs expressed concerns about rushing the deal through the Parliament without proper scrutiny.
However, Fine Gael MEP Frances Fitzgerald says this is not the time for grand-standing.
