Peat power stations could be saved by converting to biofuels, according to Sean Kelly. The European Parliament is expected to vote through a €17.5 billion fund to help industries shift away from fossil fuels. Sean Kelly believes in Ireland some of the money could be used to convert peat areas to grasses and forests to be used for biofuels.

Former peat power areas of Ireland will benefit from a new EU fund for greening the economy, says Sean Kelly. The European Parliament is expected to back the so-called ‘Just Transition Fund’ in the vote this evening. The €17.5 billion package is designed to help transform areas reliant on fossil fuels by creating new green jobs and helping businesses shift to renewable technologies. The Dublin MEP says Israel is using a disproportionate level of violence against them and that they’re committing war crimes against the Palestinians.

The EU will fail to meet its 2050 zero-emission ambitions unless farmers are on board – that’s the warning from Grace O’Sullivan. The EU is in the process of reforming the Common Agricultural Policy which sets the rules for farmers. Climate activists, including Greta Thunberg, warn that the current proposals do not go far enough to help the environment. Green MEP, Grace O’Sullivan agrees. Young people must be involved in a new EU-wide initiative to engage citizens in shaping Europe’s future.
So says Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune. She was commenting on the Conference on the Future of Europe which was launched in Ireland on Friday following last weekend’s European kick-off in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The EU is particularly keen to engage young people in sharing their views about the Europe they want to live in over the next few decades.
