The European Union’s ambitions to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 will mean people will have to be upskilled and trained to achieve those ‘extremely ambitious’ targets .
That’s according to Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly who was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
MEPs today debated the EU’s new climate package which includes a wide range of proposals to help the bloc significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions over the decades ahead.
Sean Kelly says new educational and training programs will have to be rolled out to upskill the likes of plumbers, builders, engineers and electricians.

The transition to using cleaner energies will be ‘costly’ as we move towards significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions.
That’s the warning from Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly. The European Parliament today debated the EU’s Fit for Fifty Five (55) programme in Strasbourg.
It was proposed by the European Commission last July. And it aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. It’s all part of the EU’s goal to become climate neutral by 2050.
But Sean Kelly says reaching these ambitious targets will mean lots of changes for families and businesses.

Friday Jul 09, 2021
The European Parliament is demanding that the European Commission and EU member states take ‘urgent legal action’ against Hungary for what it's calling the gradual dismantling of fundamental rights in the country.
In a vote this week, MEPs overwhelmingly condemned Hungary’s new law that bans LGBTI content from being featured in educational materials in schools or tv shows for under 18 year olds.
MEPs say the law breaches human rights and that it’s part of a broader political agenda to break down democracy and the rule of law in Hungary including media freedom.

The Prime Minister of Slovenia came in for blistering criticism during a debate in the European Parliament this week (Tuesday 6 July) on the Slovenian presidency of the Council of the EU which has just begun.
MEPs in the European Parliament in Strasbourg slammed Janez Janša for his attacks on the media in Slovenia and other rule of law issues including the erosion of judicial independence and respect for minority rights.
