Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Fine Gael's five MEPs are calling for an EU-wide embargo on imports of Russian coal, oil and gas as soon as possible.
The European Commission is now proposing a ban on imports of coal. But so far they haven’t called for an embargo on oil and gas supplies from Russia.
This morning the Commission’s foreign policy chief told the European Parliament that Europe is spending a staggering one billion euro a day (€1bn) on Russian energy supplies.
Ireland South MEP Sean Kelly says Russia needs to be hit with the strongest possible sanctions.

Interview Colm Markey on EU Emissions Directive
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Thousands of farmers will have to pay at least two thousand four hundred euro (€2400) every year for an environmental permit under new EU proposals. And they could be left waiting for months to get one. That’s according to Fine Gael MEP Colm Markey.
The Midlands North-West MEP says European Commission proposals to update the Industrial Emissions Directive is a bureaucratic nightmare for Irish farmers that will do little to address environmental challenges.
Well Karen Coleman caught up with Colm Markey in the European Parliament in Strasbourg and she first asked him what the Commission was proposing.

That’s according to Fine Gael MEP Colm Markey.
The Midlands North-West MEP says European Commission proposals to update the Industrial Emissions Directive is a bureaucratic nightmare for Irish farmers that will do little to address environmental challenges.
Instead he argues, it will put individual farmers under public scrutiny and lead to serial objectors trying to frustrate the process.

EU emissions proposals ‘a bureaucratic nightmare for farmers’ – Markey
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
The European Commission’s proposal to update the Industrial Emissions Directive is a bureaucratic nightmare for Irish farmers and will do little to address environmental challenges.
So says Fine Gael MEP Colm Markey. The Commission proposals extend the scope of the directive to gradually cover Europe’s largest cattle, pig and poultry farms. According to the Midlands North-West MEP, that would see thousands of farmers having to apply to the Environmental Protection Agency for an industrial emissions license under strict conditions.
He says the thresholds are far too low and the timing is all wrong. (The Industrial Emissions Directive is one of the EU’s key pieces of legislation to help prevent and control pollution.)

Interview Clune on ‘Right to Repair’ versus “throwaway” culture
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
MEPs will vote on a range of proposals to give consumers incentives to get goods repaired rather than replaced. They want rules to ensure products like computers, washing machines and mobile phones last longer and that consumers have access to cheap spare parts and software updates.
Tomorrow’s vote (Thursday) comes ahead of European Commission proposals on right to repair rules expected later this year.
According to a Eurobarometer survey, 77% of EU consumers would rather repair their goods than buy new ones. But they have to replace or discard them because of the cost of repairs and lack of service provided.
In the following interview, Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune talks to Karen Coleman (in the European Parliament in Strasbourg) about the need to replace our “throwaway culture” with the right to repair.

Stop ‘throwaway’ culture with ‘right to repair’ – Clune MEP
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
People should be able to easily repair a broken product like a washing machine or computer rather than throwing it away and buying a new one.
So says Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune who was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Tomorrow MEPs will vote on a range of proposals to give consumers incentives to repair products rather than replace them. They want rules to ensure products like computers, white goods and mobile phones last longer and that consumers have access to cheap spare parts and software updates
Their recommendations will feed into new European Commission plans to create ‘right to repair’ rules.
Here’s Deirdre Clune.

Interview Barry Andrews MEP on Russian energy sanctions
Tuesday Apr 05, 2022
Tuesday Apr 05, 2022
The EU should impose immediate sanctions on imports of Russian energy supplies because of the increasing atrocities being committed by Russian forces against Ukrainians.
That’s the demand from Dublin MEP Barry Andrews. Calls for tougher sanctions against Russia have increased following the news over the weekend of Russian killings of Ukrainian civilians in Bucha outside Kyiv.
However, Germany has warned of the devastating impact an energy embargo could have on its own and other European economies. EuroParlRadio’s Karen Coleman spoke to Barry Andrews in the European Parliament in Strasbourg and asked him about imposing tougher sanctions on Russia.
