The Scottish vote on independence will lead to change in the EU regardless of the outcome. So says the Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness. She was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg [Sept 2014] where the Scottish vote is being debated. It is not clear what will happen to Scotland’s membership of the EU if the majority of the people vote for independence. Here’s Mairead McGuinness.

Sinn Fein is warning that Phil Hogan should expect to be heavily scrutinised in his upcoming hearing in front of the European Parliament’s Agricultural Committee. Sinn Fein’s Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan, says he is an unsuitable candidate for the EU Agricultural Commissioner job. And she says several Irish MEPs are opposing his nomination. The EU Parliament hearings of prospective Commissioners starts on September 29 and Mr Hogan will go up before the Parliament Committee on October 2nd.

Ukrainian's live link to EU Parliament for crucial vote

The European Parliament in Strasbourg this week linked live to the Ukrainian Parliament so the vote on the EU-Ukraine Association agreement could be ratified simultaneously. The agreement aims to foster increased co-operation in EU-Ukraine relations in areas such as economic reform and recovery, energy, transport and environment. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly said it was a privilege to be part of what he called an historic occasion.

The European Parliament this week [Sept 2014] voted through the EU-Ukrainian Association Agreement. MEPs described the vote as a move of solidarity with Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. The agreement aims to increase co-operation between the EU and Ukraine in areas such as economic reform and recovery, energy, transport and environment. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says the agreement is a strong display of support for Ukraine and he's demanding that Russia respects Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The Fine Gael MEP and former GAA president Sean Kelly believes the new owner of the Hayes hotel in Thurles, Co Tipperary understands its historical significance. The GAA was founded there in 1884. Because the new hotel’s owner is a Tipperary native, Mr Kelly believes he would better appreciate its landmark importance. Speaking from the European Parliament [Sept 2014] Sean Kelly says the new owner will also understand the commercial value of preserving the hotel’s history.

The GAA needs to discuss the preservation of the Hayes hotel in Thurles, Co Tipperary with its new proprietor. So says the Fine Gael MEP and former GAA president Sean Kelly. In 1884 the GAA was founded in the hotel’s billiard room. It recently fell into financial difficulty, going into receivership last April. It was purchased by a Tipperary native at an auction in the RDS yesterday for €650,000. Mr Kelly told EuroParlRadio that the GAA must discuss the necessity of preserving the historic significance of the Hotel with its new owner and be willing to offer help.

Irish-Polish dispute causing job losses - Hayes

Jobs and money have been lost as a result of the on-going payments dispute between 3 Irish Construction firms and the Polish Roads Authority. That’s according to the Fine Gael MEP, Brian Hayes who this week called for EU action to resolve the dispute. He says SIAC, Sisk and Roadbridge have not received payment for Polish road building projects, which received EU funding. Speaking in the European Parliament [Sept 2014] Mr Hayes said the losses to the Irish companies involved have been substantial.
