The EU is stepping up its efforts to tackle the Ebola virus. EU Foreign Ministers met in Luxembourg yesterday where they agreed on a series of measures to counter the spread of the virus. The Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan says that, although there will be no direct screening of people entering Ireland, screening is underway in other EU countries.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan has outlined some of the steps the EU is taking to tackle the Ebola virus. EU Foreign Ministers met in Luxembourg yesterday and they agreed to increase their efforts to counter the spread of the virus. This morning Mr Flanagan outlined some of those measures during a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The European Parliament is pledging to do what it can to support the Northern Ireland peace process. The President of the Parliament, Martin Schultz last night said the Parliament was willing to act as an honest broker in the process. The European Parliament is willing to act as an ‘honest broker’ to support the Northern Ireland peace process. That was the pledge made last night in Strasbourg by the European Parliament president Martin Schultz. Mr Schultz told MEPs that all sides in the Northern Ireland peace process should refrain from what he called ‘dangerous mutual provocation’. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly explains the reasons behind Mr Schultz’s statement.

The Sinn Fein MEP for the Midlands North-West Constituency, Matt Carthy, has dismissed Phil Hogan’s attempt to discredit him during Mr Hogan's appearance in front of the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee last week [Oct 2nd]. Mr Hogan was questioned by MEPs during his hearing before the Committee for the position of EU Agriculture Commissioner. During the hearings Mr Hogan quoted from a letter that was sent to him by Michelle O’Neill, Sinn Fein's Agriculture Minister in Northern Ireland. She congratulated Mr Hogan on his appointment in the letter. Mr Hogan referred to the letter during his hearings and he said he hoped Mr Carthy wouldn’t get into trouble for questioning his fitness to be a commissioner. However, Matt Carthy said that the Minister's letter was not an endorsement of Mr Hogan's candidacy.

The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy is still insisting that Phil Hogan is the wrong person for the job of EU Agriculture Commissioner. Mr Carthy challenged Mr Hogan during his hearing yesterday [Oct 2] before the European Parliament's Agriculture Committee. Those opposed to Mr Hogan's nomination are still demanding answers to outstanding queries such as his threatened legal action against the Independent MEP Nessa Childers and consultancy fees paid to Irish Water.
