Ni Riada defends Adams on Cahill rape allegations

The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh ni Riada says she believes Gerry Adams’s version of how he handled Mairia Cahill’s allegations of rape. Ms Cahill has alleged she was raped by a suspected IRA member in 1997 and that the rape was subsequently covered up by the IRA and Sinn Fein. Ms ni Riada says that she believes Gerry Adams urged Mairia Cahill to seek help when he learnt about the abuse allegations. However, Ms Cahill has refuted Mr Adams’s version of events. The incoming president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker will outline the political priorities of his team of Commissioners to the European Parliament this morning. After his presentation, the MEPs will vote on the incoming College of Commissioners. If, as expected, that vote is passed, then Mr Juncker and his team will officially begin business on November the 1st. The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says Mr Juncker will now have to deliver on promises he has made.

The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says the Irish Central Bank needs to re-examine the new lending rules it’s planning on bringing in next year. The Central Bank has proposed measures to limit the amount that banks can lend to customers buying a home. Mr Hayes, who was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, says the Bank should look at its plans again to see if they are being pitched correctly.

The process of choosing EU commissioners needs to become more democratic. So says the Independent MEP Nessa Childers who was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Tomorrow the incoming EU Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker will present the final composition of his team and its work programme to the Parliament. MEPs will debate the priorities for the Commission over the next five years. They will then vote on the new Commission which, if passed, will come into effect in November. However, Nessa Childers says the way the Commissioners are chosen by their governments has to change.
