The Independent MEP Nessa Childers says the rollout of Irish water charges should be suspended until a proper system is in place. Ms Childers says that it is wrong for Ireland to introduce water charges during these austerity years. She says the operation of Irish water is a ‘disaster’ and that it’s not right to charge people for water consumption at this time.

The Independent MEP Marian Harkin has accused the Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe of lecturing Irish hauliers. Ms Harkin’s remarks followed Monday’s protests by truckers against high road tax costs. She says the Government should follow the British decision to offer a tax rebate to hauliers.

The EU can’t do much to help reduce the high road tax costs that Irish hauliers have been protesting against. That’s according to the Independent MEP Marian Harkin who was speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Ms Harkin says that Ireland, like the UK, has full control of its tax systems and the EU has no powers to force Ireland to change its tax laws.

The European Parliament today voted in favour of the incoming EU Commission. The vote took place following an address to the Parliament by the incoming Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. The new team will officially begin work on November 1st. The 27 College of Commissioners includes Phil Hogan who was recently endorsed for the position of EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development. The Sinn Fein MEP for the Midlands North West Constituency Matt Carthy – who had opposed Mr Hogan’s nomination – says he will work with him.

The European Parliament has voted in favour of the new incoming EU Commission. The MEPs cast their votes following an address to the Parliament by the incoming European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. MEPs approved the new college of 27 Commissioners with 423 votes in favour, 209 against and 67 abstentions. The new Commission now needs to be formally appointed by EU heads of state or government to enable it to take up duty on 1 November for a five-year term. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says the timely approval of the Commission makes a huge difference.

A Sinn Fein MEP is the latest party member to come to Gerry Adams’s defence over the Mairia Cahill rape allegations controversy. Liadh ni Riada who represents the South constituency says Mr Adams deserves huge credit for the Northern Ireland peace process. She says she believes Gerry Adams’s version of how he handled Mairia Cahill’s allegations of rape. Ms Cahill has alleged she was raped by a suspected IRA member in 1997 and that the rape was subsequently covered up by the IRA and Sinn Fein. Here’s Liadh ni Riada.
