The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says the Irish meat factories needs to show more respect to farmers, amidst the dispute between the two sides over beef prices. Ms McGuinness made the comments at the European Parliament in Brussels after farmers staged nationwide protests outside meat factories demanding a better price for their animals. The Agriculture minister Simon Coveney is hopeful that a compromise can be reached. However Ms McGuinness says that the meat industry doesn’t appreciate enough the work farmers do.

A row is brewing between the EU commission and Italy and France over their national finances. Both Eurozone countries are being queried by the EU Commission over their budget plans. According to reports, their budgets risk breaching new EU fiscal rules which were adopted at the height of the Eurozone crisis. The Commission can return a budget back to its government for revision if it believes it’s non-compliant with EU rules.
