The former Irish Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly has been re-elected as the European Ombudsman. Ms O’Reilly who was originally elected to the position last year was re-elected by a substantial majority of MEPs today in the European Parliament. She had to go up for re-election as the new Parliament has begun a new 5-year term. The European Ombudsman investigates complaints about maladministration in the EU institutions and EU bodies. Ms Emily O’Reilly was unopposed in today’s vote.

The European Parliament plans to secure an additional €45m [forty five million euro] for research and innovation. The extra tranche of funding is for the Horizon 2020 programme which is the EU's science and research programme. It aims to strengthen Europe’s technology, scientific and innovative base across the EU. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says the extra monies will help boost innovative initiatives in Europe including Ireland.

The poor attendance of two Irish MEPs to the European Parliament is negatively impacting the work being done by other Irish MEPs. So says the Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada who was speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Ms ni Riada was commenting on a recent report by Vote Watch Europe which found that the voting record of Irish MEPs in the European Parliament was poor. The main reason was the lack of regular attendance in the Parliament by both Brian Crowley and Luke Ming Flanagan. Both MEPs have stated health and other personal reasons for their inability to attend. But Ms Ni Riada says the MEPs need to return to the Parliament soon.

The construction of a motorway between Cork and Limerick could potentially qualify for funds from a new EU investment fund. That’s according to the Minister for European Affairs Dara Murphy. Mr Murphy was responding to recent announcements by Jean-Claude Juncker in the European Parliament. The EU Commission president outlined details of a new €315billion EU investment fund. It’s supposed to boost economies and provide jobs in EU countries. Mr Murphy says he thinks a new Cork-Limerick motorway could receive some monies from the new fund.

The Blue Star programme was a joint winner of this year’s European Citizen’s prize which is awarded by the European Parliament. The idea of the Blue Star programme is to create a better understanding of the EU in primary schools. Pupils get involved in projects and activities that help them to see how the European Union affects all of our lives. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly nominated the Blue Star Programme for this year’s prize.
