Ukraine crisis pushing inflation to levels not seen for decades – Draghi
Tuesday May 03, 2022
Tuesday May 03, 2022
The Ukrainian crisis is disturbing international supply chains and it’s causing volatility in the prices of raw materials and energy. And there’s a major risk that rising prices and shortages of fertilisers will cause food crises.
That’s according to the Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. During an address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg this morning, he said thirty million more people could suffer hunger between 2023 and 2026 because of the war in Ukraine. And he warned, rising costs are also having a major impact on European economies.

Mario Draghi told MEPs, there’s a need to moderate people’s bills and fuel prices to ensure sanctions against Russia are more sustainable. And he said Italy has been calling on the EU to put a ceiling on gas prices imported from Russia.

Tuesday May 03, 2022
Tuesday May 03, 2022
Ukraine’s resistance is keeping freedom alive – that’s according to Billy Kelleher. This morning the Russian defence ministry claimed it had destroyed a storage facility in Odessa being used to house weapons sent by Europe and the US. Whilst Ireland continues to supply non-lethal equipment, many other western countries are sending arms. Fianna Fáil MEP, Billy Kelleher, says it is right that we help Ukraine as much as possible.

Anti-war supporters want Russian victory - Kelleher
Tuesday May 03, 2022
Tuesday May 03, 2022
Billy Kelleher has accused the anti-war movement of “deep down” wanting a “Russian victory”. The Fianna Fáil MEP made the remarks on Twitter and is standing by them this morning. He believes that NATO countries sending weapons to Ukraine is “very justifiable” in order to help Ukrainians defend themselves. He says without the resistance, and without international support, Ukraine would be wiped off the map.

Ireland economy to be hit “early and hardest”
Monday May 02, 2022
Monday May 02, 2022
The cascading impact of the energy crisis in Europe on the real economy is going to hit Ireland “early and hardest”, Barry Andrews warns. But the Fianna Fáil MEP also says Ireland should bounce back more quickly. Rising energy prices driven, first by covid, and then by the Ukraine war, are expected to be felt right across the economy. Barry Andrews wants the government and the EU to work to try and cushion the blow. He says Ireland should get ready.

Energy: Ireland must reciprocate Brexit solidarity - Andrews
Monday May 02, 2022
Monday May 02, 2022
Ireland must stand up for countries worst hit by the Russian energy crisis, in the same way as they stood by Ireland after Brexit – that’s the view of Barry Andrews. Last week Russia cut off gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland. EU energy ministers have been meeting this afternoon to discuss the implications and show solidarity. Fianna Fáil MEP, Barry Andrews, says Ireland is far less exposed because we don't rely on Russian oil and gas, but we must step up and help our European neighbours who helped us through Brexit.

Interview Cuffe on Right to Repair rules
Friday Apr 08, 2022
Friday Apr 08, 2022
The European Parliament this week voted for a range of demands for an upcoming European Commission proposal on the right to repair planned for later this year. MEPs say consumers should be able to buy longer-lasting products that can be easily fixed rather than replacing them with new ones.
They also want consumers to be able to get software updates for goods like smartphones to avoid having to replace them regularly. They’re calling for practices which unduly constrain the right to repair or lead to obsolescence to be considered as “unfair commercial practices” and banned under EU law.
Well Green MEP Ciarán Cuffe spoke to Karen Coleman in the European Parliament in Strasbourg about the proposed Right to Repair proposals.
