The European Parliament is calling for better strategies to tackle gender inequalities in the European Union. MEPs today voted for practical actions and more effective monitoring to make real headway against discrimination in the labour market, education and decision-making. The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune says the EU Commission needs to introduce laws to ensure greater pay equality between men and women across the EU.

The European Union is looking for a new strategy to promote equality between men and women beyond 2015. The gender gap in equality was debated in the European Parliament last night. According to a European Parliament report, progress on gender equality in the EU is too slow. MEPs say much more needs to be done to bridge the gender equality gap. The Fine Gael MEP, Deidre Clune says the EU needs to bring in laws that will force employers to provide equal pay for the same work regardless of the sex of the employee.

Mr Kelly was speaking in the European Parliament which will debate the FIFA corruption scandals tomorrow. The European Parliament is calling for tighter regulation of rules governing the prescription of veterinary antibiotics to animals. The MEPs want to stop the practice of mass medication of animals with antibiotics in order to cure a couple of sick animals on farms. They say the over prescription of antibiotics to both humans and animals is leading to an increased resistance to infections and common diseases. The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan says this resistance is taking its toll annually in Europe.

The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada says the Irish government has the power to re-negotiate the EU fishing quota to help struggling fishermen in Ireland. She was speaking in Strasbourg where she’s been meeting the EU Fisheries Commissioner, Karmenu Vella. Ms Ni Riada has accused the Minister for the Marine, Simon Coveney of ignoring smaller fishermen in Ireland.
