Ireland has nothing to fear from a potential EU free trade agreement with the US. That’s the view of the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes. Mr Hayes was speaking in the European Parliament which cancelled a debate and a vote due this morning on the EU’s negotiating position on TTIP. It’s the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership deal that the EU and the US are currently negotiating. There’s disquiet in Europe over certain aspects of the talks. All of the Irish Sinn Fein MEPs are against any TTIP agreement. Here’s Brian Hayes.

The Independent MEP Nessa Childers is demanding the removal of a controversial clause from the EU-US trade talks. The European Parliament postponed a debate and a vote this morning on the EU’s negotiating position on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership talks known as TTIP. MEPs are divided over whether or not a controversial investor protection clause known as an ISDS [Investor State Dispute Settlement] should be included in the agreement. Nessa Childers is one of the MEPs who wants it removed entirely from the talks.

Divisions among members of the European Parliament over certain aspects of the EU-US trade talks have led to a postponement of a debate and vote on TTIP today. The MEPs were supposed to vote today on the EU’s negotiating position on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership talks between the EU and the US. But divisions among MEPs within the Parliament’s second-biggest block led to the postponement. There’s disquiet in Europe over a controversial investor protection clause known as an ISDS [Investor State Dispute Settlement clause] being negotiated. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy who’s opposed to a TTIP deal, says the inclusion of an ISDS agreement would be ‘unacceptable’.

The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada, is calling for a ‘cultural exclusion’ clause for Ireland in any free trade deal brokered between the EU and the US. The European Parliament has made a number of recommendations to the European Commission for its Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership [TTIP] talks with the US. Ms Ni Riada says any such free trade deal could jeopardise Irish cultural and audio-visual industries. She says Ireland should be entitled to the same cultural exclusion clause that France managed to broker.

She was referring to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, known as TTIP. Talks are currently underway between the EU and the US on TTIP. And the European Parliament is this week making a number of recommendations on the trade talks to the European Commission. Liadh Ni Riada, says an EU-US free trade deal could have detrimental effects on the state broadcaster.
