The repossessions of people’s homes in Ireland has been raised in the European Parliament by an Irish MEP. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy spoke about repossessions in Ireland during the week when he addressed the Parliament. Mr Carthy says Europeans don’t understand that austerity is still affecting large numbers of people in Ireland despite signs of economic recovery.

A free trade deal between the EU and the US will lead to job losses as well as job creations. That’s the view of the Independent MEP Marian Harkin. She was referring to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership deal that’s being negotiated between the EU and the US. The European Parliament this week postponed a key debate and vote on TTIP because of differences among MEPs over a controversial Investor State Dispute Settlement mechanism. Marian Harkin says that in principle she’s for a TTIP deal but that there will be downsides to it.

A controversial state dispute mechanism that’s being included in the EU-US trade negotiations isn’t necessary. That’s according to the Independent MEP Marian Harkin. She was referring to the Investor State Dispute Settlement mechanism known as the ISDS. The European Parliament this week postponed a key debate and vote on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership talks because of differences among MEPs over the ISDS. It enables companies and investors to take legal action against countries if they believe their laws are hindering their operations there. Marian Harkin says there’s no need for any ISDS mechanisms between the EU and the US.

The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says the EU Commission needs to intervene early when there’s price volatility and other market uncertainties in the dairy industry. The MEP for the Midlands North-West constituency was commenting on a recent report issued by the European Parliament’s Agriculture committee. The Committee found that the high degree of price volatility along with other recurring crises make investments in livestock and other production methods very difficult. MEPs say the EU should develop better ways of responding to volatile changes in the dairy sector. Here’s Mairead McGuinness.

The large chunk of media in Ireland that’s owned by Denis O’Brien’s media empire is to questioned at an EU level. The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan will today submit an official question to the EU Competition Commissioner. She wants the Commissioner to investigate whether or not there are any competition issues in relation to Mr O’Brien’s ownership of Irish media outlets.

A planned debate and vote in the European Parliament this morning on the talks between the EU and US on a free trade agreement have been postponed until next month. The postponement followed disputes among MEPs over a controversial mechanism for resolving disputes between foreign investors and states. A number of MEPs are against including the Investor State Dispute Settlement mechanism in any EU-US trade agreement. However, the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says Europe has nothing to fear from its inclusion in an agreement. And he says, Europe needs this agreement.
