The Greek government has limited time left to provide acceptable proposals to its EU counterparts to prevent a banking collapse and an exit from the Eurozone. The Greek government caused consternation in Brussels yesterday when it failed to present new bailout proposals. Well this morning the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will address the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy says EU leaders need to respect the outcome of last weekend’s referendum in Greece and show leniency towards the Greeks.

The Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will address the European Parliament this morning. It’s expected Mr Tsipras will outline the conclusions of his summit meeting with EU leaders in Brussels yesterday. Greece has been given forty eight hours to strike a new bailout deal with its Eurozone creditors or face a banking collapse. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy says EU leaders need to stop imposing austerity measures on the Greeks.

Eurozone finance ministers will make another attempt this evening to broker an agreement on Greece. Hopes are fading that a solution will be found quickly with some reports from Brussels saying the Greek government hasn’t presented anything new to their EU counterparts. However, the Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada says last weekend’s referendum result needs to be recognised by the EU and that they need to be more forgiving towards Greece.

Eurozone finance ministers have been arriving in Brussels for emergency talks on the Greek crisis. Reports from Brussels suggest the Greek government has not presented any new detailed proposals in paper ahead of tonight’s summit. Earlier today the European Commission chief, Jean-Claude Juncker said he didn’t want Greece to exit the Eurozone. However, the Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada says the EU Institutions are demanding too much from the Greeks.

A Fine Gael MEP is pushing for hurling to be given official EU heritage status. Sean Kelly who represents Ireland South, says he has already spoken to the European Commission about his proposals. He says hurling is a unique game in Europe that deserves the coveted award and the benefits it would bring.

Ireland can be a role model for Greece as it embarks on yet another set of talks with Eurozone leaders and finance ministers. That’s according to the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes who was speaking in the European Parliament. This morning the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told MEPs that he does not want to see Greece exit the Eurozone. However, Mr Hayes says EU leaders will not cave in and allow the Greeks to get debt write downs from their creditors.
