A nationwide approach involving national, local and community groups is needed to ensure Ireland takes in as many refugees as it can handle. That’s the advice from the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes who was speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. This morning the President of the European Commission said the EU needs to help resettle one hundred and sixty thousand refugees many of whom are in Italy, Greece and Hungary. Here’s Brian Hayes.

The President of the European Commission has pleaded with EU countries to open their arms and help the tens of thousands seeking refugee in Europe. In his State of the Union address this morning, Mr Juncker told MEPs that Europe’s own history has been marked by millions of people fleeing persecution and oppression. The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says binding quotas need to be introduced to ensure every EU country takes their share of refugees.

The President of the European Commission says EU countries need to relocate a further one hundred and twenty thousand refugees who’ve fled to Italy, Greece and Hungary. And he said that altogether Europeans have to help a total number of one hundred and sixty thousand refugees. In an emotional State of the Union Address this morning Jean-Claude Juncker told the European Parliament Europe’s own history was marked by millions of people fleeing persecution and oppression.

The European Parliament today voted for proposals to extend a ban on animal cloning to include the cloning of all farm animals, their descendants and products derived from them. The proposed ban would include any imported animal products derived from cloning methods. The MEPs are calling for the cloning ban because they say it leads to cruelty to animals and that there are general ethical issues surrounding cloning methods. The Parliament referred to findings that they say show a majority of EU citizens strongly oppose the consumption of food from animal clones. The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan welcomed today’s vote.

The EU needs to tackle below cost selling tactics and so called ‘hello’ money to properly help farmers deal with market and price volatility. That’s the call being made by the Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly. Mr Kelly welcomed yesterday’s announcement by the EU Commission of a €500m (five hundred million) rescue package for dairy farmers and pigmeat producers. But he says the EU needs to do more to ensure farmers get paid fair amounts for their produce.

The EU’s five hundred million (€500m) support package for European farmers should improve cash flow for farmers. So says the Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly. The EU Commission yesterday announced details of the support package that’s to help farmers struggling with market volatility and political uncertainty. Falling prices have affected farmers in many EU countries including Ireland. The new package will allow for €500 million of EU funds to be used for the benefit of farmers immediately. Mr Kelly explains how the package could assist farmers with the prompt issuing of direct payments.
