The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy today welcomed the decision of the IFA president Eddie Downey to step aside while a review of the organisation’s pay packages is conducted. Mr Carthy says the payment of a high salary to the former general secretary Pat Smith was inexcusable. The Midlands North-West MEP is calling on the IFA to be completely transparent on the salaries it pays to its employees including those in top positions.

A draft EU law that would enable any EU country to restrict or prohibit the sale and use of EU-approved GMO food or animal feed on its territory was rejected by the European Parliament today. Many farmers in Ireland use genetically modified feed for their animals. A ban on animal GMO feed could have a negative impact on their incomes. However, the Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan says Irish farmers should avoid giving GM feed to their animals.
