The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says Turkey should not be allowed to join the European Union. Mr Hayes believes Turkey is moving in the wrong direction politically and economically. According to the Dublin MEP, the majority of MEPs in the European Parliament do not support Turkish membership of the EU.

Social media giants like Facebook and Instagram face big fines if they break new draft EU data protection rules. The new pan-European data protection bill was debated in the European Parliament this week. The draft laws are designed to give citizens control over their private data, while also creating clarity and legal certainty for businesses to spur competition in the digital market. Internet companies like Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram could face huge fines if they don’t adhere to the data protection laws once they come into force. In addition, companies will also have to appoint a data protection officer if they process sensitive data on a large scale or collect information on many consumers. MEPs in the European Parliament have voted for a resolution that calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa. The twenty year old has been held in an Egyptian prison since August 2013. The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan was instrumental in getting the resolution through the Parliament. She says the charges being levelled against Ibrahim are false.

The European Parliament will today vote on a resolution that calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa. He’s been held in an Egyptian prison since August 2013. The Egyptian authorities are claiming he took part in violent protests in a mosque in Cairo but human rights organisations such as Amnesty International say the claims are false. The Sinn Fein MEP, Lynn Boylan, who’s been instrumental in highlighting Ibrahim’s case, says the twenty year old could face the death penalty if he’s found guilty of the alleged crimes. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy says the IFA should step up its vigilance of the talks on the EU-US trade deal known as TTIP. The Midlands North-West MEP is openly critical of TTIP which he says will damage the Irish agricultural sector and particularly the beef industry. Speaking from the European Parliament, Mr Carthy referred to recent IFA concerns about an EU trade deal with the Mercosur group of South American countries. The IFA’s National Livestock Chairman Henry Burns recently said a Mercosur deal would damage Irish and EU agriculture industries. Matt Carthy says the IFA should be equally concerned about a TTIP deal.
