The farming crisis in Europe was hotly debated in the European Parliament this morning. MEPs called on Phil Hogan, the EU Agriculture Commissioner, to do more to help farmers cope with the challenges of making a living today. He said money is being allocated to alleviate the crisis in the European agriculture sector.

The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada says life has to go on as normal in Brussels despite the recent terrorist attacks that claimed 32 [thirty two] lives and injured [three hundred and forty] 340. The Ireland South MEP was speaking in the European Parliament where last night MEPs stood for a minute’s silence to mark those killed and injured in the attacks. MEPs today will debate existing and new ways to fight terrorism. According to Liadh Ni Riada people can’t live their lives in fear of an attack.

A minute’s silence was held in the European Parliament’s Agricultural Committee this week to mark the number of farmers across the EU who have taken their own lives because of the crisis in the agricultural markets. The EU Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan was also present. The minute’s silence was held after a French MEP Jose Bove (Greens/EFA, FR) requested it to highlight the desperation of farmers over falling prices for their produce. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly, who attended the event, said it highlights the difficulties farmers are enduring across the EU.
