New EU rules should make it easier for people to move abroad within the EU following a vote in the European Parliament this week. MEPs voted to ease free movement for citizens by making it simpler to prove the authenticity of documents such as birth or marriage certificates in another EU member state. To avoid any need for translation, new multilingual EU forms are to be attached to the documents. The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune, who sits on the European Parliament’s Transport Committee, welcomed the vote.

The EU Commission has no right to dictate the tax rates of EU member states. That’s the warning from the Independent MEP Marian Harkin. She was speaking in the European Parliament where MEPs this week adopted a resolution supporting a European Commission anti-tax avoidance package. However, a number of Irish MEPs including Marian Harkin expressed concerns that the Commission plans may interfere with the tax sovereignty of EU countries.

The European Commission’s plans to extend the duration of its multi-billion euro investment programme may not materialise. So says the Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada who claims there is no money left to sustain it beyond its 3-year term. The so-called Juncker plan was created to provide public funding for infrastructure and innovation projects to make them more attractive to investors. The Commission plans to extend the programme beyond its original timeframe. However Ms Ni Riada, who sits on the European Parliament’s Budget Committee, warned this would not happen without extra funding from wealthier EU members.
