The damning findings of the long-awaited Chilcot report highlight the need to ensure Shannon airport is not used for stop-overs by US military forces. That’s the conclusion of the Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan. The report, which was published today, concluded that the invasion of Iraq in 2003 was based on “flawed intelligence and assessments” that went unchallenged. And, it found that the UK went to war with Iraq before peaceful options were exhausted. Here’s Lynn Boylan.

Mr Carthy says the lack of discussion about the impact of a Brexit on Northern Ireland highlights the need for people North and South of the border to work towards an acceptable Brexit agreement.

The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says he understands pressure is being put on the British government to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to trigger British withdrawal from the EU. The Dublin MEP was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg where Brexit has dominated debates this week. Mr Hayes says the EU want the British to trigger exit negotiations once the new leader of the Tory party is decided which is likely to be sometime in September.

It’s critical that a trade deal between Britain and the EU does not take years to conclude. That’s the warning from the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes. Mr Hayes, who was speaking in the European Parliament, referred to the current trade deal that’s being brokered between Canada and the EU. He said the CETA (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) deal has taken 8 (eight) years to conclude. And the Dublin MEP warns, the Canada deal would pale in significance to a future EU-UK deal.

The President of the European Commission condemned Britain’s leading leave campaigners Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage for their lack of patriotism in quitting ahead of Britain’s withdrawal negotiations from the EU. Jean-Claude Juncker told MEPs patriots don’t abandon ship when the going gets tough. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says it’s still very unclear when the British are going to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty which will trigger the withdrawal process
