EU calls for a single military headquarters for civilian and military missions have been getting mixed reactions from MEPs in the European Parliament. Yesterday, the President of the European CommissionJean-Claude Juncker said the EU needed to move towards having common military assets. Mr Juncker has previously called for the establishment of an EU army which he’s said would help the EU to persuade Russia it’s serious about defending the values of the EU. However, the Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan said her party was absolutely opposed to the idea of a European Army.

The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan has strongly rejected calls being made for a European army. Ms Boylan was reacting to statements made by the President of the EU Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker fora common military force. During his State of the Union Address to the EuropeanParliament yesterday, Mr Juncker told MEPs the EU needs a single military headquarters. Mr Juncker is also proposing the establishment of a European Defence Fund to boost research and innovation in Defence capabilities. However Lynn Boylan says Sinn Fein are opposed to such a move.

However, the Midlands North-West MEP believes Ms Vestager’s ruling on Apple requires further clarification.

The Independent MEP Marian Harkin has strongly criticised the European Commission for refusing to answer a question about the thirteen billion euro in back taxes the Commission claims Apple should pay to Irish taxpayers. The Midlands North-West MEP had questioned the EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager about her recent ruling on Apple during a debate in the European Parliament yesterday. Marian Harkin asked Commissioner Vestager to provide assurance that the €13 billion ‘Apple tax’ would be available for use in Ireland. However,the Commissioner never addressed her query.

The majority of people in Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to stay in the EU during the Brexit referendum. However Matt Carthy says the Scots are showing much more unity when it comes to getting the EU to respect the outcome of the Scottish vote. The Midlands North-West MEP also warns that the EU needs to abide by the Good Friday Agreement when it comes to recognising EU citizenship of people from Northern Ireland.
