The Taoiseach this morning condemned the British government for what he called its “bad faith efforts” to undermine a Treaty freely entered into.
Micheál Martin was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. He told MEPs unilateral action by the British government on the Northern Ireland Protocol, would be “deeply damaging” and would mark a “historic low point”.
Brexit and the problems with the Protocol weren’t the only topics the Taoiseach touched on during his address. Other issues included the war on Ukraine, John Hume’s legacy and the benefits of Ireland’s 50 years of EU membership.
Well Green Party MEP Ciarán Cuffe gave his reaction to the Taoiseach’s speech, to journalist Angelique Ferat who was in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament has called on the EU to endorse his country’s application to join the bloc.
Ruslan Stefanchuk made the call in the European Parliament in Strasbourg today. His pleas followed comments by the Taoiseach on Ukraine EU membership, when he also addressed MEPs in the French city.
Earlier this morning Micheál Martin told the Parliament, he “strongly” supported Ukraine’s EU membership application.
Well Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune says there is strong support in the Parliament for Ukraine to join the EU.

Mr Martin said the European Union has worked hard to find ways to minimise the negative impacts of Brexit on businesses and citizens of Northern Ireland.
Dublin MEP Ciarán Cuffe says Mr Martin spoke well and was clear about his views on the Protocol.

Emmanuel Macron made the comments in a recent interview with a newspaper. It’s caused outrage in many circles including Ukrainian ones.

The Taoiseach has warned unilateral action by the British government on the Northern Ireland Protocol would be “deeply damaging” and would mark a “historic low point”.
Micheál Martin was speaking in the European Parliament where he talked about a range of topics including Ireland’s membership of the EU, the war on Ukraine and the Northern Ireland Protocol.
He told MEPs there are solutions to practical problems under the Protocol if there is the political will to find them. But he said, that would require the UK government to engage with good faith, seriousness and commitment.

The EU will have to consider “stronger measures” against the UK government if it introduces legislation that overrides the Protocol on Northern Ireland and breaches international law.
That’s the view of Fianna Fail MEP Barry Andrews who was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Taoiseach Micheál Martin will address the Parliament on Wednesday morning.
There’s widespread speculation the British government will introduce a controversial bill that would disapply parts of the Protocol.
Barry Andrews says “continuous appeasement” of the UK government is “achieving nothing”.
