The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy says it’s a good thing that the official signing of a major free trade deal between the EU and Canada has been stalled. The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement CETA was supposed to have been signed off today in Brussels. But those plans were postponed following the rejection of the deal by a regional parliament in Belgium. Now officials and diplomats are busy conducting talks in Belgium to try to get the Belgians to agree on the deal. However, Matt Carthy says it’s right that people air their concerns about CETA.

Boylan calls on Health Minister to phase out bad fats in food
Wednesday Oct 26, 2016
Wednesday Oct 26, 2016
An overwhelming majority of MEPs today voted for a resolution calling for mandatory limits on the use of certain fats in food. The industrially produced fats are known as trans-fatty acids and they can be found in the likes of deep fried foods, some soups and sauces along with cakes and other bakery products. They’re said to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, infertility, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and obesity. MEPs say there’s evidence that Denmark’s introduction of legal limits for industrial TFAs in 2003, significantly reduced deaths caused by cardiovascular disease. The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan says the Health Minister Simon Harris should set Irish limits on their use in foods.

Ireland could lose out if proposals for an EU-wide common consolidated corporate tax base come into force. That’s the warning from the Independent MEP Marian Harkin. Last night in the European Parliament, the EU’s Economics Commissioner Pierre Moscovici outlined new proposals for a common consolidated corporate tax base across the EU. The EU Commission wants to introduce a common corporate tax base to begin with. And then, at a later stage, it wants to bring in the consolidation element. That would mean companies would have to aggregate their profits across the EU and then divide out the taxable profits among member states. Marian Harkin says that could be bad for Ireland.
