The European Parliament is calling for better support for those who use sign language to communicate. In a vote today, the MEPs backed proposals to get official recognition of sign language used by deaf people in each EU country. The Parliament is supporting a range of proposals including better funding for sign language initiatives and training along with the introduction of legislation to ensure universal design in multimedia applications for deaf people. The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada who voted for the proposals, says deaf people need help in many different ways.

A controversial investor-state dispute settlement system that’s part of the EU-Canada trade deal, is a fair system. That’s according to the Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly. The European Parliament today rejected a proposal to refer the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement - CETA - to the European Court of Justice. A number of MEPs had called for the referral over fears it may be incompatible with EU Treaties. Critics of the dispute mechanism say it gives multinationals the power to sue states if they’re unhappy with certain laws. However Sean Kelly says the dispute system is necessary.

The European Parliament has rejected a proposal to refer the EU-Canada trade deal - CETA - to the European Court of Justice. A number of MEPs, including the Independent MEP Marian Harkin, had called for the referral over fears it may be incompatible with EU Treaties. They were concerned about the inclusion of a controversial aspect of the trade deal that provides investors with a mechanism to sue states if they’re unhappy with certain laws. However, the Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says Ireland has a lot to lose if the CETA deal doesn’t go ahead.
