The European Parliament has backed clearer rules for pension schemes to move across borders. Providers of workplace pension schemes, who want to move their operations across national borders, will now have to get the approval of a majority of their members. They’ll also have to get the backing of regulators in both the host and recipient country, under new rules approved by MEPs today. The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes, who was responsible for steering the legislation through the parliament, now explains what it will mean.

The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune says she and her other party colleagues will work together to try to secure Mairead McGuinness’s nomination for the European Parliament’s presidential elections. Ms McGuinness yesterday confirmed she will contest the elections. The Midlands North-West MEP is now canvassing for support within the European People’s Party group, the EPP which Fine Gael is a member of. They’ll vote in December for the candidate they want to run for the election on their behalf. And then the entire Parliament will vote in the European Parliament’s presidential elections in January. She’s now canvassing for support within the European People’s Party group, the EPP which Fine Gael is a member of. They’ll vote in December for the candidate they want to contest the election on their behalf. And then the entire Parliament will vote in the European Parliament’s presidential elections in January. Ms McGuinness says her colleagues in the Parliament understand the difficult situation Ireland is in when it comes to Brexit.

The current president of the European Parliament Martin Schulz announced this morning that he will not seek a re-election to the presidency position. That paves the way for a new president to head up the Parliament. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness is seeking the nomination from her own political group in the Parliament. She’s now canvassing for support within the European People’s Party group, the EPP. They’ll decide who they want to run from thier group in December in a vote. And then the entire Parliament will vote on the presidential candidate in January. That ballot will include all of the rest of the candidates from other political groups running for the Parliament’s top job. Mairead McGuinness says she faces a tough battle ahead.

The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says she’s aware she faces a tough battle ahead in her bid to win the presidency of the European Parliament. Yesterday the Midlands North-West MEP confirmed she is throwing her hat in the ring for the Parliament’s top job. Her first battle will be to secure the support of her colleagues within the European People’s Party group in the Parliament. She says there may be potentially four or five candidates within the EPP who’re interested in running for the presidency. However, if Mairead McGuinness secures the EPP backing she will be in with a strong chance of winning the race.

MEPs in the European Parliament are calling for greater supports for people who are deaf or have serious hearing impairments. Today the MEPs voted for a range of measures including better funding for sign language initiatives and training of sign language interpreters. They’re also calling for the introduction of legislation to ensure universal design in multimedia applications for deaf people. And the Parliament wants sign language to be recognised as an official language in all EU member states. The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada says such services are badly needed.

The Midlands North-West MEP, who is currently a vice-president of the Parliament, is a member of the powerful European People’s Party Group, the EPP, in the Parliament. Members of the EPP will decide next month what candidate they want to campaign for the Parliament’s top job. The current president of the Parliament Martin Schultz, is considering running for a third term. However, Mairead McGuinness says she’s glad to be competing for the job.
