The Sinn Finn MEP Matt Carthy has defended his party leader Gerry Adams and says he’s not pulling the party down. The Midlands North-West MEP was responding to the latest controversy to dog Mr Adams. The row over Brian Stack’s murder and his family’s attempts to seek the truth behind their father’s death in 1983 has again raised questions about Mr Adams’s credibility. However, Matt Carthy argues Mr Adams is not damaging Sinn Fein.

The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness last night lost her battle to become the European People’s Party candidate for the upcoming presidency of the European Parliament. Ms McGuinness came second out of four candidates in the secret ballot of EPP MEPs. The winner was Antonio Tajani who is an Italy MEP and a former EU Commissioner. The presidential elections will take place in January when all of the MEPs will vote on the various candidates running. Mairead McGuiness says she fought a very good campaign and that she’ll now run to be re-elected as a vice president of the Parliament.

The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says she will now seek a re-election as a vice president of the European Parliament. Last night the Midlands North-West MEP lost the vote to become the EPP candidate for next year’s European Parliament presidential elections. Four MEPs are battling it out to secure the nomination of the European Parliament’s biggest group to be its candidate in next year’s presidential elections. In a secret ballot tonight MEPs from the European People’s Party, the EPP, will choose from four candidates who include the Irish MEP Mairead McGuinness. She faces tough competition from a former EU Commissioner, a former Prime Minister and a senior French MEP. In January all of the MEPs in the Parliament will vote for a range of candidates in the presidential elections. The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune says if Mairead McGuinness wins tonight’s vote, she stands a good chance of taking the overall prize of the presidency of the European Parliament.

Tonight members of the Parliament’s biggest group – the European People’s Party (EPP) will vote to select the candidate they want to represent them in next January’s European Parliament presidential elections. Four candidates including Ms McGuinness are competing for selection by the EPP group. The others are a former EU Commissioner from Italy, a former prime minister from Slovenia and a senior French MEP. The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune says Mairead McGuinness, who is a vice president of the Parliament, would be an ideal European Parliament president.

Continual pressure on the Egyptian authorities is the only solution to securing Ibrahim Halawa’s release. That’s the advice from the Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan who’s campaigned to get Ibrahim out of prison. The young Irish citizen has been languishing in a jail in Cairo since his arrest there during demonstrations in 2013. Last night the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz highlighted Ibrahim’s case during an address to MEPs. Lynn Boylan says ongoing pressure on the Egyptian authorities led to the release of the Australian journalist Peter Greste and his colleagues. And she says the EU and Irish authorities need to apply similar tactics.

A number of Irish MEPs have welcomed calls by the European Parliament’s President Martin Schulz for the Egyptian authorities to properly treat the detained Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa. Mr Schulz highlighted Ibrahim’s case during his opening address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg last night. He told MEPs he’s written to the Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi about the young man. And he said he’s calling on the Egyptian authorities to treat Ibrahim Halawa as he ought to be treated when he was arrested as a minor. Mr Halawa , who was arrested during demonstrations in Cairo in 2013, turned twenty one today. However the Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan, who’s campaigned for his release, says his family are very concerned about his mental health.

The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz highlighted the plight of the young Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa during an address to the Parliament last night. Mr Schulz told MEPs he’d written a letter to the Egyptian president. He said he’s calling on the Egyptian government to discharge its obligations to human rights and to treat Ibrahim Halawa as he ought to be treated when he was arrested as a minor. The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan, who’s campaigned to get Mr Halawa released, welcomed Martin Schulz’s comments.

An Irish presidency of the European Parliament would be a prestigious win for Ireland. So says the Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly. Tonight the Parliament’s biggest group – the EPP (European People’s Party) will vote on the candidate they want to represent the Group in next year’s European Parliament’s presidential elections. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness is one of four candidates running for the EPP election. She faces tough competition but she is in a strong position as a current Vice President of the Parliament. Whoever wins tonight’s vote will then go on to contest the presidential elections which will take place in January when all of the MEPs will vote. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says it would be very good for Ireland if it had another Irish person as president of the European Parliament.
