Theresa May's address on Brexit this morning is a hot topic of discussion in many European corridors of power including those of the European Parliament. The British Prime Minister said the UK could not possibly remain within the European single market. But she said she would seek the greatest possible access to a single market through a comprehensive trade agreement. The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada says Ireland has nothing to gain from Mrs May’s hard Brexit stance.

MEPs in the European Parliament in Strasbourg have been reacting to Theresa May’s speech on Brexit today. During her address in London’s Lancaster House earlier today, the British Prime Minister said the UK could not possibly remain within the European single market. But she said she would seek the greatest possible access to a single market through a comprehensive trade agreement. Mrs May also announced that the UK would end its ‘vast contributions’ to the European Union. The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada says May’s hard Brexit stance will hit Ireland very hard.

Ms Anderson says confidence in Northern Ireland’s institutions had nosedived among the “nationalist republican” people there. The Sinn Fein MEP has accused Fine Gael and Fianna Fail of engaging in what he calls ‘voodoo economics’ when it comes to multinationals using loopholes to avoid paying taxes. The Midlands North-West MEP says there’s increasing global pressure to stop big corporations and wealthy individuals from avoiding taxes and that Ireland needs to ‘re-shape’ its tax models. The European Commission today published its full findings on Ireland’s tax arrangements with Apple. It said ‘selective treatment’ enabled Apple to pay minimal sums of taxes. Here’s Matt Carthy

The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly is urging businesses in Ireland to source funding from the European Investment Bank to finance projects they want to develop. The EIB is supporting the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) which is an initiative launched jointly by the EIB Group and the European Commission to help overcome the current investment gap in the EU by mobilising private financing for strategic investments. The EIB has just opened a permanent office in Dublin with the aim of providing financial support for infrastructural projects and to lend to small enterprises here. Mr Kelly says those businesses that would qualify to get EIB loans, should contact the Dublin office to seek help with any information they may need for their projects.
