The EU-Canada Trade Deal known as CETA is a flawed deal that will negatively impact on Irish farmers, the Irish economy and the democratic system. That’s the grim prognosis of the Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy. He was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg which today voted in favour of the landmark Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement. The deal will remove most tariffs on goods and services between Canada and the EU. Supporters of CETA say it will boost EU economies and create jobs. However, Matt Carthy says he’s very disappointed the deal was passed by MEPs.

The majority of MEPs today voted in favour of the EU-Canada Trade deal known as CETA. The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement will remove most tariffs between the EU and Canada and supporters of it say it will provide substantial trading opportunities between the two blocs. The European Parliament has today voted in favour of the EU-Canada Trade deal known as CETA. Four hundred and eight (408) MEPs backed the controversial deal while two hundred and fifty four (254) voted against it. Those in favour of it say it will boost EU economies and provide much needed trading opportunities with Canada. Critics of the CETA deal say it’s bad for workers, the environment and the food industry. And they argue it favours big corporations. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy voted against the deal.

She says the current inspection system is inadequate and that it’s impossible for the Irish coast guards to properly monitor what damage Super Trawlers may be doing around Irish waters.

It’s been revealed today that the European Parliament’s biggest political group will hold one of its major annual meetings in Wicklow. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly confirmed that the European People’s Party, which Fine Gael is a member of, will host the party’s bureau meeting in Wicklow in May. The Ireland South MEP says it’s likely the meeting will take place in the Druid’s Glen and that it will happen at a pivotal time in European politics.
