A ‘bad tempered divorce’ from UK in no one’s interest – Hayes
Friday Feb 17, 2017
Friday Feb 17, 2017
European economies will suffer if the EU punishes Britain by building a wall around the UK financial services after Brexit. That’s the warning from the Fine Gael Brian Hayes who says the City of London is the biggest financier of the European economy. Mr Hayes was part of a recent EPP (European People’s Party) delegation to the UK where he met senior UK figures to discuss Brexit. They included the Governor of the Bank of England and the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The Dublin MEP believes a bad tempered divorce from the UK is in no one’s interest.

European Parliament calls for stricter rules on Robots and AI – Clune
Thursday Feb 16, 2017
Thursday Feb 16, 2017
EU wide rules are needed for the fast-evolving field of robots and artificial intelligence. That’s the view of the European Parliament which today called for stricter rules to govern robots and robotic technology. MEPs want clarity on who takes responsibility for accidents or deaths that may occur as a result of robotic errors. This could happen with the likes of driverless cars where a computer rather than a human being is driving the vehicle. The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune, who is on the European Parliament’s Transport Committee, says the whole area of liability and robots is a grey one that needs to be clarified.

European Parliament proposes EU Finance Minister – Hayes
Thursday Feb 16, 2017
Thursday Feb 16, 2017
The European Parliament is proposing the establishment of an EU Finance Minister who would be the chair of the Eurozone ministers. The idea is part of a number of proposed reforms MEPs voted on today to change the way the European Union operates. MEPs are also suggesting giving the EU Commission the power to formulate and give effect to a common EU economic policy that would be backed by a euro-area budget. The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says the proposal to create an EU Finance Minister is unrealistic and unwarranted.

CETA deal exposes Ireland to over liberalisation of services – Harkin
Thursday Feb 16, 2017
Thursday Feb 16, 2017
The Independent MEP Marian Harkin says the EU-Canada trade deal exposes Ireland to too much liberalisation of services. The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement was approved yesterday by MEPs. However, Marian Harkin says Ireland did not do enough to protect certain sectors from being liberalised by market forces. Those sectors could include the likes of water provision and health care services. The Midlands North-West MEP says Ireland lost out on the opportunity to safeguard certain sectors from competition.

Thursday Feb 16, 2017
Thursday Feb 16, 2017
The EU-Canada Trade deal, which was approved by the European Parliament yesterday, could have a devastating impact on the Irish beef sector. That’s the warning from the Independent MEP Marian Harkin. MEPs yesterday voted to endorse the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement, known as CETA. And this morning the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will address the European Parliament to acknowledge that vote. But Marian Harkin says the combination of Brexit and increased imports of tariff-free beef from Canada, could do major harm to the beef industry in Ireland.

Thursday Feb 16, 2017

The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will address the European Parliament this morning. His speech follows yesterday’s endorsement by MEPs of the EU-Canada trade deal. More than four hundred MEPs voted for the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement - CETA - which will see the removal of almost all tariffs on goods and services between the two trading blocs. However, the Independent MEP Marian Harkin voted against the CETA deal. One of her fears concerned a special court settlement system that enables investors to sue an EU country if it implements laws that effect its business there.

Compensation for Beef sector needed if CETA damages industry – McGuinness
Wednesday Feb 15, 2017
Wednesday Feb 15, 2017
The Irish beef sector will have to be compensated if the new EU-Canada trade deal ultimately damages the industry. That’s according to the Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness. The European Parliament today backed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement which will see most tariffs disappear on goods and services between the two trading blocs. Under the deal Canada will be able to export a defined tonnage of beef to the EU. This will be phased in over 3 to 7 years. But those imports could damage the Irish beef sector. Mairead McGuinness says the EU Commission is aware of these concerns.
