Avoidance of hard border in Ireland a key priority – EPP chair European Parliament

The head of the biggest political group in the European Parliament has told MEPs this morning that the avoidance of a hard border in Ireland will be a key priority in the Brexit negotiations. Manfred Weber who is the chairman of the European People’s Party in the Parliament, said that Ireland’s interests are also Europe’s interests.

A former coach of Colm, ‘Gooch’ Cooper says the talented footballer stood out from the crowd when he was teaching him as a young fella. The former president of the GAA Sean Kelly coached Colm when he was a student at St. Brendan’s College in Killarney. He says that when the Gooch was on your team you knew that you were going to get three or four points that no one else could get.

‘Level playing pitch’ needed for smaller fishing vessels – Ni Riada

The EU needs to create fairer rules for fishermen who use small fishing vessels. So says the Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada. The Ireland South MEP was speaking in the European Parliament which last night debated the lack of rules governing the size of fishing vessels in the EU. MEPs say the same common fishing rules currently apply to all boats regardless of their size. Liadh Ni Riada says a fairer vessel classification system is needed.

MEPs demand answers to tainted Brazilian meat exports

MEPs in the European Parliament have called on the European Commission to investigate why EU border checks failed to detect tainted food produce from Brazil. MEPs last night debated the revelations from a two-year investigation by the Brazilian Federal Police. It showed that potentially dangerous meat products were placed in the food chain. Brazil is the world’s biggest exporter of red meat and poultry. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly is calling on the EU to place an immediate ban on imports of Brazilian beef produce to Europe. He says the Brazilians should be subject to the same standard of scrutiny as food producers from within the EU.

He was responding to recent revelations of serious fraud and corruption in the Brazilian beef trade. MEPs call for stepping up of security – Clune

It’s nearly a year ago since the Brussels attacks that left thirty two (32) dead and many more injured. Since then the EU has introduced a range of measures to better protect European citizens against terrorist attacks. But this week MEPs in the European Parliament stressed the need to step up security. They called for better information sharing among EU countries and additional measures to prevent radicalisation.
