The head of the biggest political group in the European Parliament has told MEPs this morning that the avoidance of a hard border in Ireland will be a key priority in the Brexit negotiations. Manfred Weber who is the chairman of the European People’s Party in the Parliament, said that Ireland’s interests are also Europe’s interests.

The former president of the GAA Sean Kelly has paid tribute to Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper who has announced his retirement from Gaelic football. Mr Kelly, who is now a Fine Gael MEP, coached Colm when he was going to school in St. Brendan’s College in Killarney.

The former president of the GAA Sean Kelly coached Colm when he was a student at St. Brendan’s College in Killarney. He says that when the Gooch was on your team you knew that you were going to get three or four points that no one else could get.

The EU needs to create fairer rules for fishermen who use small fishing vessels. So says the Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada. The Ireland South MEP was speaking in the European Parliament which last night debated the lack of rules governing the size of fishing vessels in the EU. MEPs say the same common fishing rules currently apply to all boats regardless of their size. Liadh Ni Riada says a fairer vessel classification system is needed.

MEPs in the European Parliament have called on the European Commission to investigate why EU border checks failed to detect tainted food produce from Brazil. MEPs last night debated the revelations from a two-year investigation by the Brazilian Federal Police. It showed that potentially dangerous meat products were placed in the food chain. Brazil is the world’s biggest exporter of red meat and poultry. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly is calling on the EU to place an immediate ban on imports of Brazilian beef produce to Europe. He says the Brazilians should be subject to the same standard of scrutiny as food producers from within the EU.

He was responding to recent revelations of serious fraud and corruption in the Brazilian beef trade. Last night MEPs debated the Brazilian beef scandal in the European Parliament. They demanded to know why EU border checks failed to detect tainted beef coming into the EU from Brazil. The visit is part of the European Parliament’s inquiry into the Panama Papers scandal which was uncovered last year. It revealed how some of the rich and wealthy were using tax havens to evade tax, launder money and avoid sanctions. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy, who is on the Parliament’s Panama Papers inquiry, is part of the delegation to the US.
