The ongoing trade talks between the EU and the Mercosur Latin American countries should be suspended. That’s the call being made by the Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy. His demand follows recent revelations of serious fraud and corruption in the Brazilian beef and poultry trade. Mr Carthy says the Brazilian scandal highlights the dangers of importing cheaper poultry and beef products from non EU countries.

The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy is calling on the EU to suspend all imports of Brazilian beef and poultry. His call follows recent revelations of serious fraud and corruption in the Brazilian beef and poultry trade. A two-year investigation by the Brazilian Federal Police showed that potentially dangerous meat products were placed in the food chain. MEPs this week demanded to know why EU border checks failed to detect tainted Brazilian meat products coming into the EU. The scandal comes as the EU continues to negotiate a trade deal with the Mercosur countries in Latin America. Here’s Matt Carthy.

The young man’s been languishing in a jail in Cairo since his arrest there during demonstrations in 2013. He’s always denied any wrongdoing.
