Ireland could lose out on attracting valuable businesses from the UK because of a lack of good housing and other infrastructural and services issues. That’s the warning from the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes. Ireland is just one of many other EU countries who’re hoping to lure businesses and EU agencies from the UK in the run up to Brexit . But Irish chances of attracting some of these businesses could be scuppered because we won’t be able to provide the kind of facilities people coming here expect. Here’s Brian Hayes.

The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes is urging the Government to sell its stake in Bank of Ireland before the end of the year. Speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the Dublin MEP said the timing is right for the State to sell the fourteen percent (14%) stake it has in the Bank. He reckons that stake is worth around one to one point five billion euro (€1bn-€1.5bn). And, he’s advising that the monies from the sale go to the new Rainy Day Fund.

The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada is calling for a review of the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy. Her calls follow the announcement last weekend that Britain is to withdraw from the London Fisheries Convention. The deal allows six European countries, including Ireland, to fish in British waters. However, the British government argues its withdrawal from the convention will enable the UK to take back control of its own waters post Brexit. Liadh Ni Riada says that withdrawal will change the Common Fisheries policies.

The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy says young farmers are facing unnecessary barriers when trying to access funds from the National Reserve Scheme. The €5m (five million euro) scheme is supposed to encourage young people into farming by making funds available to them provided they fulfil certain criteria. But Matt Carthy says the scheme’s requirement that the applicant meets certain agricultural educational conditions is too draconian. He says the Agriculture Minister Michael Creed needs to change the rules.

That’s according to the European Parliament which last night debated measures to halve food waste by 2030. They’re to vote on those proposals today. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead Mc Guinness says food waste poses a financial burden on both families and consumers in Ireland. And she’s happy to see the issue high up on the political agenda at a national and European level.

An EU initiative may enable more of us to enjoy free wifi in public spaces in the future. That’s according to the Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada who is a member of the European Parliament’s Budget Committee. This week MEPs in the Committee approved the scheme that aims to provide funding for the rollout of free wifi in certain public places. The next step will be to secure the backing of the majority of the MEPs in the European Parliament for it to be officially approved. However Liadh Ni Riada is confident that will happen. She now explains.
