The Fine Gael MEP has dismissed recent suggestions by a former Irish diplomat that Ireland should give serious consideration to a radically different relationship between Ireland and the EU post Brexit. The report for the UK Policy Exchange think tank, which was drawn up by Ray Bassett, said Ireland should consider other options including Irexit. Here’s what Sean Kelly thought of it.

If Michael Collins were alive today he wouldn’t be very happy at the suggestion that Ireland should consider following Britain out of the EU. So says the Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly who was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Mr Kelly was reacting to recent comments made by a former Irish diplomat. In a report for the right-leaning UK Policy Exchange think tank, Ray Bassett argued that Ireland should give serious consideration to a radically different relationship between Ireland the the EU post Brexit. The Estonian Prime Minister this morning presented to the European Parliament the priorities of the incoming Estonian Presidency of the EU council of Ministers. Yesterday MEPs reviewed the work of the outgoing Maltese presidency. During that session, the European Commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker slated MEPs for their poor turnout to hear the Maltese prime minister speak. He said the parliament wasn’t serious and he described it as being “very ridiculous”. The Parliament’s President Antonio Tajani rebuked Mr Juncker for his remarks. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says Mr Juncker went a step too far with his criticisms. However, she argues they are a wake up call for MEPs.

MEPs in the European Parliament have been reacting to derogatory comments about the parliament that were made yesterday by Jean-Claude Juncker. The European Commission President derided MEPs when so few of them turned up to hear an address by the Maltese prime minister. Mr Juncker denounced the parliament as being totally ridiculous. He complained that there would have been a much bigger attendance if the German or French leaders were present. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness had this to say about Mr Juncker’s comments.

The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit to Ireland has highlighted again differences over the EU-Canada trade deal known as CETA. Yesterday both the Taoiseach and Mr Trudeau reaffirmed their commitment to the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. However, the Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy says the deal is a serious threat to Irish democratic and judicial systems. And he says it’s imperative the CETA deal gets debated in public.

The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was treated to dinner in Dublin Castle last night. The dinner followed a day of events yesterday when Prime Minister Trudeau met the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. Both leaders praised the EU-Canada trade deal known as CETA. Mr Trudeau said it would give Canadian and Irish businesses greater access to each other’s markets. However, critics of the deal say it’s being pushed through without proper discussion in national parliaments. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy is demanding the CETA deal get a proper airing in the Dail.

The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy has hit out at the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes for accusing Sinn Fein MEPs of siding with the far right in a vote today on corporate tax transparency rules. The majority of MEPs voted in favour of new moves to force multinationals based in the EU to publically disclose their tax information on a country by country basis. In a press release Mr Hayes accused the Sinn Fein MEPs of siding with far-right politicians like Marine le Pen’s Front National in France by refusing to back the rules. However, Matt Carthy says the Sinn Fein MEPs abstained from voting because they believe the measures don't go far enough.

The European Parliament today approved moves to make large firms make information about the tax they pay in each country in the world publicly available. The MEPs backed a proposal requiring multinationals to report their tax bills on a country-by-country basis. However they also accepted possible exemptions in the case of commercially-sensitive information. The proposals are a bid to crack down on corporate tax avoidance, which is estimated to cost EU countries between fifty to seventy billion euro (€50bn-€70bn) a year in lost tax revenues, according to the European Commission. The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says the proposals will make Europe more tax transparent.

Next steps
After approving the draft report by 534 votes to 98 votes, with 62 abstentions, MEPs voted to send the report back to the Committees to start negotiations in 1st reading on the basis of a plenary mandate.
