The European Parliament today voted to establish a temporary committee on counterterrorism. The new committee will examine the extent of the terrorist threat in Europe and look into any potential faults and malfunctions which might have allowed recent terrorists attacks in Europe to occur. Opponents of the committee claim it will be hijacked by ‘right-wingers’ who’ll use it to propose more law enforcement and security laws. However, the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes is in favour of the committee’s establishment.

However, Ms Ni Riada says applicants have to go through a 15-step process that makes it extremely difficult to complete. And she’s warning that projects are folding as a result.

The president of the European Commission’s description of the European Parliament as “ridiculous” is disgraceful and unjustified. That’s according to the Independent MEP Marian Harkin. She was referring to Jean-Claude Juncker’s outburst yesterday during a debate reviewing the Maltese presidency of the European Council. Mr Juncker derided MEPs when so few of them turned up to hear an address by the Maltese prime minister. He denounced the parliament as being totally ridiculous and he warned that he would never again attend a meeting of its kind. However, Marian Harkin says the busy schedules of the MEPs mean they can’t always attend every session in the chamber.

The Fianna Fail MEP Brian Crowley’s absence from the European Parliament is definitely having an impact on the party’s influence in important Parliamentary issues such as Brexit. That’s according to the Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan. Ill health has meant that Mr Crowley has been largely absent from the European Parliament since he was re-elected to it in 2014. Mr Crowley’s inability to attend the European Parliament was highlighted again following concerns raised by his substitute Kieran Hartley. Lynn Boylan says it’s crucial MEPs attend the parliament on a regular basis.
