The Independent MEP Marian Harkin says it’s essential that the principle of same pay, same work, same place applies across all EU countries. The Midlands North-West MEP was referring to the EU posting of workers directive. It’s supposed to mean that employees who’re sent abroad to work in another country temporarily are paid the same wage as local workers.

The recent decision by Bank of Ireland to phase out Irish language options on its newer ATMs has been slammed by the Ireland South MEP Liadh Ni Riada. Bank of Ireland has said few people use the Irish language options on its ATMs. However, Ms Ni Riada says she’s written to the Bank to demand a meeting with them to get them to reverse that decision.

The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni has defended the cost of translating EU parliament documents and meetings into the Irish language. She refutes claims that Irish is the most expensive of the EU’s twenty four official languages, when it comes to translating EU material. Recent Irish media reports have said the cost of translating EU parliament documents into Irish was almost twice the average rate for all languages. However Ms Ni Riada, who regularly speaks Irish in the Parliament, says that’s simply not the case.

Public acceptance has been a key element of an international electricity interconnector that’s being built between Belgium and Germany. So says the Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy. He recently hosted in Brussels a delegation from Ireland who visited the Belgian electricity operator Elia which is developing the Belgian-German interconnector. Mr Carthy says it’s going to be entirely underground and it’s similar to the one being planned by Eirgrid for Ireland.

The European Parliament today voted for moves that could help Europe’s ageing population to get better access to products and services as they get more infirm. The MEPs approved draft rules to give the elderly and people with disabilities better access to the likes of ATMs and ticketing and check-in machines. Other items such as e-book readers, websites and mobile device-based services were also included in the list of services that MEPs say should be easily accessible for people with disabilities including the elderly. The Independent MEP Marian Harkin says accessibility will be an increasingly important issue as people in Europe get older.

The European Parliament today approved draft rules to give the elderly and people with disabilities better access to key products and services such as phones, ATMs and ticketing and check-in machines. Other items such as e-book readers, websites and mobile device-based services were also included in the list of services that MEPs say should be easily accessible for people with disabilities. Around 80 million people in the EU are affected by some degree of a disability. By 2020 it’s expected that around 120 million will have multiple and/or minor disabilities.
