All new cars should be equipped with technologies that improve car safety and reduce deaths caused by road accidents. They’re the demands being made by MEPs in the European Parliament. Last night the European Parliament debated ways to make vehicles safer such as installing systems that are capable of detecting pedestrians, braking automatically or adapting the speed. Every year, more than 25,000 people are killed and hundreds of thousands injured on Europe’s roads. About 90% of these accidents are due to human error. MEPs say that many of these deaths and accidents could be avoided by using new technologies to assist drivers in dangerous situations. The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune, who is on the European Parliament’s Transport Committee, explains.

Members of the European Parliament were given an update this week on Brexit talks, following a Brussels summit last week. British Prime Minister Theresa May pursued a charm offensive with other leaders in Brussels, but then returned to London and told the British Parliament that unless there was a trade deal by March 2019, there would be no transition period.
Marian Harkin, an independent MEP representing Midlands North-West, says this would inevitably mean a hard Brexit. She says May is wearing two masks, one for Brussels and one for London.
