Thursday Nov 16, 2017
Thursday Nov 16, 2017
The tech giant Apple plays a crucial role in the Irish economy and Ireland needs to ensure that Apple’s investment here continues. That’s the view of the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes who was responding to criticisms of Ireland during a debate this week in the European Parliament on the Paradise papers. Some MEPs accused Ireland of effectively being a tax haven that facilitated multinationals in avoiding paying their fair share of taxes. Apple has been mentioned in the Paradise Papers as one large corporation that allegedly used offshore havens to avoid paying taxes. However, Brian Hayes is warning that Ireland can’t jeopardise its relationship with Apple to appease European critics who’re calling for harmonised corporate tax rates.

The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes has dismissed claims that Ireland continues to be a tax haven that helps multinationals salt away billions in unpaid taxes. The Dublin MEP was speaking in the European Parliament which this week debated the revelations of tax dodging in the Paradise papers. Ireland was mentioned during the debate as one of the EU countries that allegedly facilitated tax avoidance. However, Brian Hayes says those days are over now that Ireland is implementing the OECD’s BEPs action plan. That’s an international tax plan that ensures profits are taxed where economic activity and value creation occur. Here’s Brian Hayes.
