The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is set to address MEPs in the European Parliament at around 9.30 (Irish time) this morning. He’ll be debating the future of Europe in what will be the first in a series of debates on the future of the European Union between EU government leaders and MEPs. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness, who is the vice president of the European Parliament, says she’s hoping it will be a lively debate.

In the European Parliament today, an amendment calling for a total ban on the use of electric current for fishing (e.g. to drive fish up out of the seabed and into the net) was passed by 402 votes to 232, with 40 abstentions.

The European Parliament today voted for moves to ban the use of electric currents for fishing. Electric pulse fishing which is practiced by some European fishing trawlers, is used to drive fish up out of the seabed and into fishing nets. Critics says it’s unnecessary, cruel and distructive. The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada, who is on the European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee, says there’s no justification for electric pulse fishing.

The Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada says the actions of the former Sinn Fein MP Barry McElduff cannot be justified on any level. The Ireland South MEP says that in hindsight, Mr McElduff should have resigned after the controversy arose following his tweeting of the video of himself in a shop with a loaf of Kingsmill bread on his head. She said that the initial decision to only suspend Barry McElduff from party activities for three months, was a collective decision taken by the Sinn Fein party.
