The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy is calling for the president of the European Central Bank to step down from an elite group of bankers known as the G30. His calls follow a damning report issued this week by the European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly. She’s recommending that Mario Draghi suspend his membership of the G30 because it might compromise the ECB’s independence. The G30 is a Washington based private group of bankers, bank governors and academics. Matt Carthy says Mr Draghi’s membership of it presents a serious conflict of interest.

And he said he didn’t want to see any new borders or barriers between Britain and Ireland or between Northern Ireland and Britain. He was responding to questions raised by MEPs following his address on the future of Europe in the European Parliament. Mr Varadkar drew on his personal family love ties to demonstrate his deep connections to Britain.

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has insisted that Ireland did not have a special deal with Apple when it came to paying its proper taxes. Mr Varadkar was responding to questions raised following his address on a debate on the future of Europe in the European Parliament this morning. Mr Varadkar was referring to a ruling by the European Commission in 2016 that Ireland granted undue tax benefits of up to €13 billion to the tech giant Apple. The Commission declared that was illegal under EU state aid rules and it ordered Ireland to recover the thirteen billion euro from Apple. However, Leo Varadkar defended Ireland today in the European Parliament.
