The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy says he believes Barry McElduff did not mean to infer any connections when he recently posted a video of himself in a shop with a loaf of Kingsmill-branded bread on his head. Earlier this week Mr McElduff resigned from his West Tyrone MP seat following outrage at the video. Matt Carthy says he did the “right thing” to step down.

Supermarkets and shoppers need to change their approach when it comes to the use of plastic packaging of goods. That’s the view of some MEPs who’ve been looking at a new EU strategy to reduce and recycle plastic waste. The European Commission published ambitious new plans this week to make all plastic packaging on the EU market recyclable by 2030. They’re also calling for the reduction of single-use plastics and the restriction of microplastics. The European Commission this week published ambitious new plans to make all plastic packaging on the EU market recyclable by 2030. The plans include proposals to radically reduce the consumption of single-use plastics like coffee cups and water bottles. The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan says it’s imperative we stop dumping plastic waste into our seas and lands.

Draghi’s membership of elite banker’s group “inappropriate” – Carthy

The European Ombudsman has called for the president of the ECB Mario Draghi to suspend his membership of an elite bankers’ group known as the G30. Emily O’Reilly issued her recommendations this week following a year-long complaint-based inquiry. The G30 is a Washington based private group of bankers, bank governors and academics. The Ombudsman has recommended that Mr Draghi step down from it to avoid compromising the ECB. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy says there needs to be greater transparency in the ECB.
