MEPs will vote today on the future composition of the European Parliament post Brexit. The exit of the British MEPs will see the Parliament shrink from seven hundred and fifty one (751) MEPs to seven hundred and five (705). It’s proposed that Ireland should gain two extra MEP seats once a proportion of the British seats have been re-distributed. MEPs are also going to vote on proposals for transnational EU electoral lists which will make up the entire territory of the European Union. The Sinn Fine MEP Matt Carthy says that’s a preposterous idea.

The European Parliament today called for a big increase in EU financing of clean air energy projects. MEPs also voted for an EU innovation fund that will provide financial support for renewable energy, carbon capture and storage and low-carbon innovation projects. Today’s vote is all part of a drive to get European citizens to understand how to innovate and use digital tools to produce, consume and preserve more sustainable and cleaner energy. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly, who is on the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee, says the innovation fund could yield exciting opportunities for Irish businesses.

The President of the European Central Bank has indicated that he would be willing to appear before the Oireachtas to discuss monetary policies. Mario Draghi made the remarks during a debate in the European Parliament last night. The Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes put it to Mr Draghi that he should appear before the Oireachtas Finance Committee to discuss the ECB’s activities in revitalising the euro and the economies of the Eurozone countries. Mr Draghi responded by saying he would be glad to accept an invitation from the Irish Parliament if he were to receive one. Brian Hayes says Mr Draghi needs to be as accountable to smaller EU countries as he is to the bigger member states.

The European Parliament today voted to end barriers to online shopping across the EU. Under the new rules that will ban unjustified geo-blocking, consumers will be able to choose which website they wish to buy goods or services from without being blocked or automatically re-routed to another website. That can happen because of their nationality, place of residence or even their temporary location. Traders will have to treat online shoppers from another EU country in the same way as local ones giving them access to the same deals and prices. The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune welcomed today’s vote.
