The European Parliament is demanding that the European Commission and EU countries step up their efforts to help end female genital mutiliation. MEPs in Strasbourg today voted for a resolution calling on the Commission and member states to include FGM prevention measures in all policy areas to try to stamp out the practice of FGM. Today’s vote follows yesterday’s International Day of Zero tolerance for FGM. The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan says much more needs to be done to stop it in Ireland.

The European Parliament today voted to shrink the number of MEPs in the Parliament post Brexit from seven hundred and fifty one (751) to seven hundred and five (705). They’re also proposing that twenty seven of the UK’s current 73 MEP seats be redistributed. Ireland will gain two MEP seats if the proposals are adopted by EU leaders. The new distribution of seats will only come into force after the UK has left the EU which is supposed to happen at the end of March 2019. European Parliament elections will take place in May 2019. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says today’s vote was both a positive and sad event.

The European Parliament today backed proposals that would see Ireland gain two extra MEP seats post Brexit. MEPs voted to reduce the overall number of MEP seats from 751 to 705 following Britain’s planned exit from the EU in March 2019. The Parliament is proposing that 27 of the UK’s 73 MEP seats be redistributed. Two of those seats are proposed for Ireland. However, the proposals will require the backing of the EU member countries. The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness thinks it’s likely Ireland will end up with more MEP seats.

The first of the “Citizen’s Dialogue on the future of Europe” will take place at NUIG tomorrow evening. It’s been organised by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the European Movement Ireland. It’s supposed to give people the chance to discuss the future direction of Europe and the challenges it faces. However, Marian Harkin says two of the meetings scheduled for the Midlands North-West Constituency including the Galway event, are being held on days when the Irish MEPs have to vote in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Ireland may gain two extra MEP seats once Britain leaves the EU. MEPs are today voting on the future make-up of the European Parliament post Brexit. At the moment Britain has 73 (seventy three) MEP seats. Some of those seats will be redistributed once the UK leaves the EU. A European Parliament committee has already proposed that Ireland should gain two of those seats. However, the proposals will still require the approval of the rest of the EU member states. The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy says Northern Ireland should continue to retain MEP seats post Brexit.
