The European Parliament today called on the European Commission to thoroughly assess the need to have the bi-annual clock change. Many MEPs believe the twice yearly one-hour change negatively impacts on people’s mental and physical health. A significant majority of MEPs today voted for the EU to investigate the need for the daylight saving hour. Here’s the Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan.

Europe will face a significant financial threat if the British fail to strike a Brexit transition deal with the EU. That’s according to the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes. He was referring to the on-going confusion and disagreement in Theresa May’s conservative party over the nature of their future relationship with the EU. Both the EU and UK are aiming to conclude a transition deal by the end of March. Brian Hayes says the consequences of failing to reach an agreement would be devastating.

Irish beef farmers are being sacrificed in the European Commission’s bid to secure a trade deal with the Mercosur countries. That’s the claim from the Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy. He was referring to recent reports that the quantity of meat that Mercosur would have the right to export into the EU has been increased to 99,000 tonnes per year. The Midlands North-West MEP said such an increase of beef into the EU market would destroy farms in Ireland.

The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy has sharply condemned the new meat quota which the EU is reported to have offered the Mercosur countries in the latest round of trade negotiations. According to reports, the quantity of meat that Mercosur would have the right to export into the EU has been increased to ninety nine thousand (99,000) tonnes per year. The EU had previously been warned that the quota shouldn’t exceed seventy thousand (70,000). Matt Carthy says that farmers and beef producers are being sacrified in a bid to seal a deal between the EU and the Mercosur states of Brazil, Uruquay, Paraquay and Argentina.
