On Monday the European Parliament's Constitutional Affairs Committee voted to fix the period for the next European Parliament elections – between 23 and 26 May 2019. But there is still no clarity over how many members will be elected from the European Parliament. The Parliament itself approved a plan last month to give Ireland two extra MEPs after Brexit, but this must still be affirmed by the Commission. Even after then, it is unclear whether Ireland's constituency borders will need to be withdrawn. Sean Kelly, Fine Gael MEP representing Ireland South, believes Ireland will probably retain the same number of constituencies, but possibly with different borders.
