An Irish woman is in the running for a key EU banking watchdog post.
Sharon Donnery – who is the deputy governor of the Irish Central Bank – was one of three people to be considered for the chair of the European Central Bank’s Single Supervisory Mechanism.

The Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy is warning the government not to deviate when it comes to securing a permanent backstop deal if Brexit negotiations break down.
The backstop agreement is like an insurance policy that would keep Northern Ireland in the European Union's customs union and single market in the event of Brexit talks collapsing.
The border issue between Ireland and Northern Ireland remains a major barrier between the EU and the UK in reaching a deal on Brexit.
Hardline British Brexiteers had wanted to impose a time-limit on a backstop deal. However Matt Carthy has rubbished such a proposal.

MEPs want to tighten the maximum limits for certain pollutants in water such as lead and harmful bacteria along with monitoring for levels of microplastics.

Single use plastic products such as cutlery, plates, straws and cotton bud sticks may face extinction following a vote in the European Parliament today (Wednesday).
MEPs will vote on a new law that forbids the sale of these kinds of single-use plastic products.
The bid to outlaw these items by 2021 was debated in the European Parliament on Monday night. The Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan says a range of single use plastic products have to be taken out of production.

The proposals include tightening the maximum limits for certain pollutants in water such as lead and harmful bacteria along with monitoring for levels of microplastics.
MEPs are also proposing the setting up free water fountains where feasible. And they’re suggesting tap water should be given for free or a low fee in restaurants, canteens and catering services.
The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says consumers need to trust the water they’re drinking from taps is safe.

The Parliament’s Agriculture Committee approved new draft rules to better protect farmers against buyers’ unfair trading practices.
The Ag Committee voted for a number of proposals including stoping late payments and short notice cancellation of orders. And they want food producers to have the right to request a written supply contract.
However, Matt Carthy has criticised the proposals saying they aren't ambitious enough and that he voted against the report.
